How To Say No In Swedish

Every bit an international educatee living in Sweden, I expected to face up some cultural challenges. Swedes, who tend to be very polite but too really dislike doing things they exercise not want to practise, have found many unique ways to say 'no' to something or someone without really maxim 'no'. These are slightly exaggerated versions based on some real life experiences and of course not all Swedes are similar this, so have it with a pinch of salt!

"It is possible that yous are not considering…"
Swedes are very suggestive when they desire to advice or tell you to do someething. Nigh often this advice is actually good for you and they just want to help you lot just telling someone what to do is rather unacceptable in Sweden. Thus, y'all tin find yourself in situations when your friends are 'suggesting' something to you without wanting to audio similar they are telling you what exactly to do. Even parents accept to hint to their kids sometimes about how kids should deport and can be heard maxim things like "Maybe yous are not considering the impact of chocolate on your health." I hateful, I was similar, "You treating your kid like an adult bro" in my head. That would basically interpret into "DO NOT EAT MORE CHOCOLATE"
"Mayhap you would be disturbing that person"

Imagine you are in a library and existence clumsy and making dissonance eating food or on your laptop. It is highly unlikely that a Swede would direct tell yous that you are agonizing them and that you should quiet downward a bit. Then, it is up to your Swedish friends to break out this truth to you. What I was told was, "If you proceed playing with your pen'southward cap, peradventure you would exist disturbing someone else in the room". That'due south a Swede extremely irritated past you and is being passive aggressive! Information technology would be roughly translated to, "STOP PLAYING WITH YOUR PEN CAP, I Deceit CONCENTRATE AT ALLLL!!!!"
"I would dear to but…"
Swedes are suuper polite and really detect it hard to just say no to coming to events. Its quite user-friendly with facebook cuz and then you lot just dont have to respond, but if you desire to create an amazingly awkward moment, simply invite in-person anyone who did not reply to the upshot invite on facebook. The reply you should wait is, "I would love to attend but I'1000 doing xyz, maybe next time I'll join." This is a 50-50, sometimes they actually desire really attend the event merely fifty-fifty if they really dont want to attend (say the event involves indian nutrient and they dont similar indian food) they would neveerrr say it. Always protecting other people feelings or just dont want any kinda conflict. I dunno, but its hilarious!
"Perhaps yous should try out that shirt over there"
At a retail store – Me: "Hey friend, how do I look in this yellow royal colored shirt?" Friend: "Mayhap you should try out that shirt over there", pointing at a muuuch more than sober colour. Ways I would never hangout with you if you wore that yellow purple shirt!!
"You should have scheduled the event before"
Another great excuse Swedes use to wriggle out of events is that they need similar ii-three weeks discover for annihilation that takes more than than 1 hour. Mostly only ways they dont want to be at the result!
